Context and challenge
Knowing that better management of heating costs can bring important savings, Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) teamed up with Demtroys.
The building is a fully occupied, 20-level high-rise with 240 units, heated by electricity.
Solution
OCH installed the Demtroys energy management system in the building.
The study reports the result of the system as a whole, without listing individual components.
Results
Demtroys plotted heating electricity consumption against monthly heating degree days, before and after installation. For the same heating degree day, consumption was lower after installation. The difference between the two slopes is the reported 31.8% reduction, shown as 32% in the study's summary.
Heating degree days measure how far each day's mean temperature falls below 18 °C, as defined by the Climate Atlas of Canada.
- This is a reduction in the rate of heating consumption. It is not a measure of whole-building electricity use.
- The study does not state the measurement dates.
